The early Christmas trees used to be decorated with edible ornaments such as fruit (particularly apples), nuts and pretzels, the first Christmas trees mentioned in Britain were erected within the royal family and a 13 year old Princess Victoria (later to become the Queen that popularized the Christmas tree across her empire) wrote about her delight with the Christmas tree that was decorated in lights and sugar ornaments in her 1832 diary entry
Other edible ornaments that started to be seen on Christmas trees during the 1800s were gingerbread cookies made in different shapes such as stars and angels – this is probably why we associate gingerbread men with the holiday season these days. From this German idea other hard cookies were also used and then we started seeing other ornaments added as the tradition spread from wooden and hand blown glass ornaments to the ideas of threading popcorn and cranberries to give us our first ‘tinsel’ style of decoration.

Chocolate Christmas Ornaments – A Favorite Christmas Treat
Now I used to absolutely love those chocolate Christmas Santas that you could buy to hang on the Christmas tree, unfortunately the little elves used to come out and ‘steal’ them off of our tree when I was growing up and somehow my brother and I always got the blame!

Apples were a fruit that used to be used quite regularly on Christmas trees which is why when artisans first started to make hand blown glass ornaments for Christmas trees they fashioned some of the earliest ones on apples.
There is also a superstition about cutting open an apple on Christmas Day – apparently if you cut one open and there is a perfect star inside and the seeds are nice and plump then the following year will be good for your health wise and you’ll have plenty of food for yourself and your family as well.

Oranges were sometimes added to a Christmas tree as they were an expensive fruit to get during the winter months so were a real treat to receive.

The pickle is probably the most commonly used vegetable Christmas ornament as it’s supposed to bring good luck. Parents hide the pickle ornament on the tree and then the children have to see who can be the first to ‘find’ it. That lucky child would be given a small gift.
Although it’s been written that this tradition has come from Germany I can’t find much on the actual origins of it except that it looks like it might have actually been a very successful PR campaign.
Sounds like a fun game to incorporate into your holiday activities though and if it does happen to bring good luck as well then that’s always a bonus don’t you think?
Carrot Vegetable Christmas Tree Ornament
I can’t imagine hanging actual carrots on a Christmas tree, but when Christmas ornaments were first being made it became a tradition for a bride to be given a carrot Christmas ornament to hang on the tree.
A carrot ornament was supposed to bring her good luck in the kitchen, but what that is based on is beyond me.
Baker’s Christmas Ornaments
